Extraordinary Meeting 2018

Extraordinary Meeting 2018

Saturday, October 20th ANA held its first Extraordinary Meeting.  It was a meeting of firsts in many ways.  We achieved quorum by proxy prior to the meeting ever taking place.  How?  One of ANA’s bylaws allows the HOA President or Building Administrator to submit a proxy for the entire building’s membership.  The participation of our full building members at Condo Escondido, Estrella Del Mar, La Cima III, Las Hortensias, Las Moradas, Selvamar, Terraza Del Mar, Villas Loma Linda, Villa Tizoc, Villas Macuaz, Vista Amapas, and Vista Romantica combined with those members who submitted a proxy and those members who actually attended the meeting helped us to the percentage of participation we needed.  We were able to begin the meeting at first call.  Since the agenda was concise and to the point, the meeting was over in 30 minutes.  Yes, 30 minutes!  We celebrated all of these firsts and welcomed our new Board – Sylvia Toy (President), Don Pickens (Treasurer), Robert Howell (Secretary), Gene Mendoza (Vocal), and Robin Spencer (Vocal) – with a delicious breakfast buffet offered by Taste Restaurant and bubbly Mimosas.  What a great meeting!

Tom Swale

Tom Swale

It is with great sadness that the Amapas Neighborhood Association announces the passing of our long time President, Tom Swale.  Tom died at age 71 unexpectedly in May, 2018.  As Tom was the heart and soul of our very active neighborhood association located in Puerto Vallarta, and many members are out of town during the off season, it has taken the Board some time to reorganize and plan a proper and fitting farewell.

Tom’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 17 at his beloved beach.  Specifics will be released closer to the date by the ANA.  Tom’s brother Steve recognized the special place so many of us in Amapas have in our hearts for Tom. Hopefully, this date will allow people out of town for the summer to attend this gathering of remembrance.

Tom Swale moved to Puerto Vallarta from Los Angeles in 2006, after a successful career as a television writer, with his long time partner Carl Romeo.  Carl passed away in January, 2016 after a brief illness. Tom joined the ANA in 2012 as President and threw himself into the job with the passion and energy that everyone so admired. Under his leadership the association grew from 40 to over 350 members, and the annual budget grew by 20 times to over $1,000,000 pesos.  The ANA has become one of Puerto Vallarta’s largest and most successful neighborhood associations, and focuses on promoting Responsible Development, improving streets and infrastructure, assuring security and providing social opportunities for members. In recognition of Tom’s involvement in civic affairs, the Puerto Vallarta City Council had recently appointed him to Puerto Vallarta’s Sister City Committee with San Francisco CA. Tom was beloved by many in the community for his dedication and optimism. As Tom observed with the initiation of a memorial fund for his husband Carl, “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

“I won’t mince words, losing Tom was a huge blow to our Association and to each of us personally,” said long time friend and Treasurer Don Pickens. “It was unexpected and a brilliant light in the community went out so suddenly, we had to regroup and recover to decide how to move forward.  But ultimately, we know that to honor Tom’s work and memory each of us must step up to keep the ANA strong.”

Tom’s last major project was to extend the sidewalk along highway 200, which is used by many community residents and tourists alike.  Approximately $500,000 Mexican Pesos will be needed to make this happen, and the ANA will announce a memorial fund to this end shortly.  Anyone who would like to donate can please write to treasurer@amapaspv.com.

Among Tom’s many accomplishments were paving of the entrance at Hortencias street, creating the first part of the Highway 200 sidewalk, creating alliances with Puerto Vallarta police to address security issues, creating the Drag Derby fundraiser held each year at Puerto Vallarta’s Gay Pride event, and working closely with the city and many experts to create new zoning laws to promote Responsible Development in Amapas.

The ANA has recently filled two Board memberships vacated by the resignations of Yasmin Todd (who moved from the area) and Harris Spiridonidis, who provided dedicated service to the ANA for many years.  Longtime resident Robert Howell, and returning Board Member Robin Spencer will join the Board.

Most importantly, the ANA has separately announced that Board Member Sylvia Toy will serve as Interim President until the next Annual meeting in February.  Sylvia’s experience and energy serving the ANA are greatly appreciated by the Board and everyone wishes her great success in this new endeavor.

“Community activism requires selfless behavior – Tom was the perfect role model.  I can’t fill Tom’s flip flops, but I will do my best to keep ANA moving forward,” she added.

2018-2019 Meet and Greet Schedule

ANA sets itself apart from other neighborhood associations by creating community through its monthly Meet and Greet activities and Night Out events.  They are great opportunities to meet neighbors, make connections, and find out what’s going on in the neighborhood.  This year we’re going to try something new.  We’re going to alternate between the third Thursday and Friday of the month.  Since some of the ANA Board members are business owners it is difficult for them to get away on Fridays while other Board members have scheduled activities on Thursdays.  Since one specific day wouldn’t work we are splitting the year down the middle.  Mark your calendars with the upcoming schedule.

Interested in hosting an ANA Meet and Greet.  Contact Robin Spencer at membership@amapaspv.com

Welcome Hospiten!

Welcome Hospiten!

On Tuesday, September 4th at Fusion Gourmet, ANA officially welcomed Hospiten as its largest corporate sponsor.  While we enjoyed a delicious breakfast, representatives from PV’s newest hospital spoke to ANA members about their new health program called MyHealth.

The four benefits of taking part of this new program include:

  • A triage service designed to give you 24 hour assistance as needed.
  • Emergency medical transport to Hospiten, if needed.
  • A full assessment that includes: blood pressure, blood work, urinalysis, electrocardiogram, and chest X-ray.  In-depth consultations with a nutritionist and a doctor to review your lab results.
  • Monthly consultations with Hospiten staff doctors.

What does this service cost?  Absolutely nothing until January 2019.  Then the services will be $30/month per individual.  Additionally, you can purchase the service on a monthly basis so if you’re a part-time resident you only pay for the months you’re in PV.  Great deal!

Interested in learning more about the MyHealth program?  Call 322-226-2081 and identify yourself as an ANA member.  They’ll answer your questions or set you up for an appointment.

ANA 2nd Annual Business Brochure

Last year ANA introduced its first Business Brochure.  It was beautifully put together and featured the logos and advertisements of the many businesses that support ANA and offer its members various discounts.  The professional compilation provided ANA’s business sponsors with concrete evidence of a benefit from which they could benefit – professional advertising for a low cost.  During Hot Season ANA office staff and Sylvia Toy have been producing the second annual ANA Business Brochure.  It has been a huge success and great fundraiser.  It will be ready for distribution in October.  Look for it soon!

Need home repairs?  Frank Horvath, ANA member, is available year-round for all types of repairs and fix-it services.  Contact him at Frank’s Fix It Company 322-118-3197.  (See the Back to School Special article and find out why he’s such a special guy.)

ANA Extraordinary Meeting – Background

Loss is a terrible thing.  It can also be an opportunity to look at things differently. Such is the case with the sudden death of ANA President Tom Swale.   There are no rules in ANA’s current by-laws to specify succession.  As a result, ANA is currently operating without a legal representative.  Even though Sylvia Toy, current ANA Board member, was selected by her fellow Board members to be the interim president, she cannot act as ANA’s legal representative.  Additionally, several Board members have been replaced and they need to be approved.

The solution presents itself in an Extraordinary Meeting.  It has been scheduled for October 20th.

We recognize that many of our members are not currently in Puerto Vallarta; therefore, the use of a proxy will need to be used.  We will email the official notice and proxy to each member.  Members should sign the proxy, scan it, and then email back to ANA.  Upon your return to Puerto Vallarta, please plan on providing the original proxy for ANA’s records.

So, ANA will send you the email on October 1st..  We’ll give you 10 days to get it back to us.  For those of you in town, we’ll be holding the Extraordinary Meeting on  October 20th..  More details to follow.
